What If Season 2 Episode 4 Recap

The fourth episode of What If Season 2 begins with a quick recap of something that happened in season one. The story begins with a focus on Gamora. Ultimately though, it is the story of Tony Stark this time around.

What If Season 2 Episode 4 shows that when our dearest Ironman sent the nuclear warhead through the wormhole, he went in through the portal and could not return before it closed. However, Tony does not die in outer space but, instead tumbles across another wormhole to enter the Grandmaster’s palace. He is in Sakaar and, is dumbfounded to be there in the first place.

This is where Tony learns that the Avengers have won and Pepper is alive, making him want to return home. The Grandmaster, however, insists that Tony stays for a party that is to happen. This party is a racecourse event with Valkyrie in the competition. To fun up the game, we have the Grandmaster playing his good ‘ol tricks which is what urges Tony to transform into Ironman and enter the racecourse to help the people in the arena. Although his suit malfunctions, the beast destroying the course explodes at the end. But why? Well, this is where Gamora enters the scene.

Initially, we are not sure why but, the two are placed together in a cell with Korg. Gamora’s revenge on Stark does not seem clear. Until the latter demands to know. Gamora introduces herself as the daughter of Thanos which statement is alarming enough and forces Tony to get out of the place, along with Korg, leaving Gamora locked in.

Gamora soon catches up, blowing up things-which also gets the Grandmaster’s attention to send people behind Stark. When Gamora and Tony come face to face, the former informs him that the Chitauri were sent by Thanos and Tony getting rid of them is what has brought them here.

In true Tony style, the man vents and puts Gamora in the loop of her trauma. He also realizes the corruptness of the Grandmaster. Tony aims to stop the Grandmaster and also sets his route to go to Thanos. This sets a series of events including Tony befriending Valkyrie, modifying his suit and hijacking the Grandmaster’s hologram system. A game for fools emerges where we see the Grandmaster being challenged by Tony for control through a race which the former accepts.

What If Season 2 Episode 4 Ending Explained

And yes, What If Season 2 Episode 4‘s ending approaches us with a race featuring all the main characters! Here is where Tony urges Gamora to choose better and get out of the shackles of Thanos, which isn’t a huge thing to get around- because she chooses the better side. Tony also beats the Grandmaster but, as the latter is the one to declare the winner he declares himself as one.

But the ending is not so sweet after that because Topaz’s melting stick kills him (not really as the mid-credits scene reveals later), making Valkyrie the ultimate winner and ruler. The melting stick also has another use: Gamora lures in Thanos and teams up with Stark to take the Titan out with the stick for good.
