She began her acting career in 1968 with the film Pax? and went on to appear in more than 90 films, working with some renowned directors, such as Felipe Cazals and Arturo Ripstein.

She won the Ariel Award for Best Supporting Actress three times, for her roles in Naufragio, Los motivos de Luz, and Nadie hablará de nosotras cuando hayamos muerto.

She also received several international honors, including Best Actress at the Havana Film Festival for Mi Querido Tom Mix and the Diosa de Plata from the Mexican Film Journalists for Escrito en el cuerpo de la noche.

Ana Ofelia Murguía was proud of her Mexican heritage and identity. She often played characters that represented the diversity and richness of Mexican culture and history.

She was especially fond of portraying indigenous women, such as Damiana Cisneros in Pedro Páramo, Juana in El jardín del edén and Mamá Coco in Coco.

She said that sheconnectedn with these characters because they reflected her roots.

The actress claimed to have Zapotec ancestry from her maternal side and to have learned some words in Zapotec from her grandmother.

She also said that she had Spanish, French, and Italian ancestry from her paternal side.

Murguía’s most famous role was that of Mamá Coco, the great-grandmother of Miguel Rivera, the protagonist of Coco. 

The filmcelebratesf the Day of the Dead, a traditional Mexican holiday that honors the deceased.
